About The Budget Makeover

Big makeovers, tiny budgets. That's the whole philosophy here. This blog exists for everyone who has ever scrolled past a gorgeous room reveal and thought, "sure, but what did that actually cost?"

What you'll find here

Every project on this site follows the same honest format:

  • A real budget, itemized. Every project includes a full cost breakdown table — paint, supplies, thrift finds, all of it. No "budget makeover" that secretly cost four figures.
  • Step-by-step instructions. Numbered steps written for real beginners, including the mistakes to avoid.
  • Before & after thinking. Not just pretty photos — an honest account of what worked, what didn't, and what I'd do differently.

What counts as "budget" here

Most projects on this site land between $25 and $200. The tools of the trade are simple: paint (the single best dollar-per-impact upgrade in existence), thrift-store and secondhand furniture, peel-and-stick everything for renters, and basic hand tools. If a project needs a contractor, a permit, or a demolition crew, it doesn't belong here.

The ground rules

  • Honest costs only. If I already owned the paint, I say so — and I still list what it would cost to buy.
  • Beginner-friendly. If a project needs skills beyond a weekend warrior's reach, I'll say so up front and suggest where to learn them.
  • Renter-aware. Plenty of projects are fully reversible, and rental-friendly alternatives are noted wherever it matters.
  • Safety first. Wear the mask when you sand, ventilate when you paint, and call a professional for electrical, plumbing, and structural work. A budget isn't worth an ER visit.
